Historians and anthropologists think the first hammocks were developed in Pre-Columbian Latin America by the Mayan people some 1000 years before the first North American civilizations established by the Europeans. As is often the case, it is believed the Mayan hammock was first developed out of necessity. The Mayan innovation rasied the user off the ground, protecting him from ground crawling creatures and unsanitary conditions. As well, an elevated sleeping or sitting position also provided exposure to cool breezes in the otherwise hot, humid environment of Central American rainforests.
